What the calculation does

Cost basis is the amount bought at the buy price, increased by the buy-side fee. Proceeds are the same amount sold at the sell price, reduced by the sell-side fee. Profit is the difference, and return on investment expresses it as a percentage of the money you committed.

  • Cost = amount x buy price x (1 + buy fee)
  • Proceeds = amount x sell price x (1 - sell fee)
  • Break-even sell price = buy price x (1 + buy fee) / (1 - sell fee)

Results are pre-tax and exclude spread, withdrawal fees and on-chain fees, all of which reduce a real-world return. If you accept bitcoin commercially, the same maths shows what holding between sale and payout cost or gained.

Frequently asked questions

How is bitcoin profit calculated?
Net profit is the sale proceeds after fees minus the total cost after fees. In formula terms: (amount x sell price x (1 - sell fee)) - (amount x buy price x (1 + buy fee)).
What is the break-even price?
The sell price where proceeds after fees exactly cover your cost after fees. Fees on both sides push break-even above your entry price, which is why small trades rarely recover quickly.
Does this account for tax?
No. Results are pre-tax. Bitcoin disposals are taxable events in many jurisdictions, so treat the output as a gross figure and confirm treatment with a qualified adviser.
Can I use it for a business that accepts bitcoin?
Yes. Use your average acquisition price as the buy price and the conversion rate at payout as the sell price to see what holding bitcoin between sale and settlement cost or earned you.
