Supplements and nutraceuticals merchant account guide

Payment Processing for Supplements

Supplement and nutraceutical brands can be rejected or frozen by Stripe, PayPal and Square when chargebacks exceed applicable card-network or acquiring-bank thresholds. Continuity and auto-ship billing, FDA and FTC scrutiny of health claims, and high refund rates make these accounts harder to underwrite.

Not every supplement merchant is prohibited, but standard-account acceptance is not blanket approval. A supplement-friendly processor assesses your ingredients, claims, subscription flow and processing history before matching you with an acquiring bank willing to support your business.

Why supplement merchants get rejected

Chargebacks and the 1% warning line

A chargeback ratio approaching 1% is a serious warning for supplement merchants, not a universal current card-network threshold. Monitoring rules vary by network, region, transaction counts and the fraud or dispute measures used. Ask your acquirer for the exact limits that apply to your account and keep disputes well below them.

Continuity and subscription billing risk

Auto-ship, free trials and recurring orders create disputes when renewal dates, prices or cancellation steps are unclear. Underwriters review your billing consent, reminders, cancellation process and refund history before approving continuity programs.

Ingredient and claim risk

Proprietary blends, restricted ingredients and aggressive health claims can trigger extra review. FDA labeling requirements and FTC advertising scrutiny apply independently of payment approval. Provide full ingredient information and evidence supporting claims; do not imply an unapproved product treats or cures disease.

Aggregation bans and restricted-business lists

Mainstream PSPs operate shared-account models with prohibited or restricted-business lists. Stripe, PayPal and Square may reject certain supplement products or require prior approval. A lawful product is not automatically eligible, and a standard account does not authorize every ingredient or billing model.

How to choose a supplement-friendly processor

Compare the underwriting terms as carefully as the rate. A provider's supplement coverage is not blanket approval for every ingredient or billing model.

  • Nutra-experienced underwriting

Choose an underwriter familiar with supplements and nutraceuticals. Confirm written approval for every ingredient, claim, selling territory and continuity or auto-ship model, not just the supplement category.

  • Chargeback mitigation tooling

Ask about dispute alerts, prevention services, clear billing descriptors, refund workflows and evidence management. Confirm tool costs and your acquirer-specific monitoring thresholds.

  • Rolling reserve terms

Get the reserve percentage, holding period, cap, release schedule and closure treatment in writing. Model the cash tied up before committing; reserve terms are account-specific.

  • Multi-MID and load balancing

If multiple merchant IDs are needed, confirm bank-approved routing, volume limits and reporting. Multi-MID processing is not permission to hide products, split transactions to evade monitoring, or bypass restrictions.

  • Settlement timing

Confirm payout frequency, funding delays, cross-border timing and conditions allowing funds to be held. Check whether weekends, reserve deductions and refunds change available working capital.

  • Fee transparency

Request transaction and per-item fees, gateway charges, monthly minimums, cross-border costs, chargeback fees and setup costs. Compare the full written quote with the directory starting rate, not just a headline percentage.

  • Backup processing

Maintain a separately approved backup where practical. A lawful Bitcoin checkout can add another payment option, but does not remove supplement regulations, tax obligations or refund responsibilities.

  • Contract terms and early termination fees

Review the initial term, automatic renewal, cancellation notice, early termination fees, equipment commitments and personal guarantees. Ask what happens to reserves and held funds when the account closes.

Supplement-eligible providers in the directory

Start with these options, then confirm your exact products, sales territories and account terms with the provider. Directory inclusion is not an approval promise.

Before you apply

Gather your business license, tax documents, owner ID, bank statements, supplier agreements, product labels, ingredient lists and relevant lab reports or COAs. Include 3-6 months of processing history, chargeback ratios and refund records where available. New merchants should disclose that they have no processing history.

Keep checkout copy and health claims compliant: state the full price, renewal schedule, auto-ship terms and cancellation process clearly. Show shipping, refund and contact information, and avoid unsupported disease-treatment claims. Have qualified counsel review labels, advertising and recurring-billing terms before you apply.
